STUDENT ARTWORK OPPORTUNITY FOR MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

Mental health awareness artwork submissions will be accepted through the end of April! Submissions should show coping skills, spread understanding about mental health issues, explain how and where to get help, or share about other mental health help. Submit your artwork to room 117 in the 6th-grade pod and complete a simple form online in the WJJMS google classroom to have a chance at winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. This artwork, no matter if you win or not, will be displayed around the school throughout the month of May. If you are interested, please feel free to contact Cori Toennes at [email protected]. EMPTY BOWLS & ARTS NIGHT WITH VENDOR FAIR

WJJMS is holding the Empty Bowls & Arts Night with Vendor Fair Friday, May 13, 2022 from 5 - 8:00 p.m. sponsored by WJJMS & BA Unified Arts. All soup bowls purchased will benefit the Colchester Food Bank and Restavec Freedom Alliance (an organization helping former Haitian child-slaves). Proceeds for both causes are split 50/50. Purchase a hand-crafted bowl for $10 ($8 for Seniors) and attend a magical evening of soup, bread, desserts, the Arts, and love. Handcrafted bowls are created by WJJMS students, staff, BA Unified Artists, and kind local artisans. Enjoy the WJJMS Art Show, Jazz Band, Choir, Guitar Club with Mr. Ramage, and an interactive Digital Media and Innovations exhibit.

STRIKE OUT CANCER FUNDRAISER

Our Strike Out Cancer fundraiser was a success! We helped support organizations provide services for people with cancer and fund cancer research. All who donated had the chance to be awarded prizes. Students and staff wore favorite BASEBALL SHIRT for MLB’s Opening Day, and visit Mel's Downtown Creamery on Thursday night. Mel’s donated a portion of their proceeds as well.

GRIT

Friday, April 1, 2022, preceding one of our Face-to-Face Friday fun events, students watched a short video on grit and determination to help them get into the right mindset for Quarter 4. Students set Q4 goals for themselves. 

SAFE FUTURES – GRADE 8 STUDENTS

Safe Futures is once again coming to WJJMS for all 8th-grade students beginning April 5-8th for Zeta Mu Team and April 11th-14th for Pi Team. Read about Safe Futures~

LMC NEWS

Students have an opportunity to vote for their favorite Nutmeg Nominee until April 29, 2022 if they have read at least two of the nominated titles found in the LMC! Students who read 5 of the nominees and fill out the LMC form documenting this will receive a free book at the Spring Book Fair. Watch for our Scholastic Book Fair news soon!

MOVIE NIGHT FOR STUDENTS

Want to go to the movies? The PTO is sponsoring a movie night for all students this Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. at Gallery Cinemas, 396 Old Hartford Road!  The movie is Sonic the Hedge Hog 2 - PG. Students – turn in your permission slips to the office, and arrive early enough to grab a snack!

MCM BUTTER BRAIDS & CAKE ROLLS PICK UP APRIL 25, 2022, 4 – 7:30 p.m.

QUARANTINE TUTORING SERVICES UPDATE

Quarantine Tutoring Services Update: Beginning April 4, 2022, Colchester Public Schools will end virtual tutoring services provided to students in quarantine in grades K-5 and the option for live-streamed instruction provided to students in quarantine in grades 6-12. Please read the communication sent via school messenger. 

VOLLEYBALL OPPORTUNITY FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN AT BACON ACADEMY

Bacon Academy Volleyball team is holding a clinic during April vacation. Bacon Academy Co-Captains and athletes visited WJJMS.

WJ READING BINGO THROUGH MAY 6, 2022

Students can start recording books they read now until May 6, 2022. Copies of the Bingo board are in the library and with ELA teachers. The Bingo Board is posted in the students' Puma Classroom!

If you are interested in volunteering or will be volunteering, please review the following:

Group I: Volunteers that assist school staff members with school activities in the presence of a Colchester Public Schools employee. Background checks are not required for Group I volunteers. To apply to be a Group I Volunteer, please complete the  Group 1 Volunteer Application form. Group I volunteers are those who assist school staff members with school activities such as those listed below:

-assisting in a classroom, cafeteria, or library when a staff member is present
-accompanying a class on a field trip during the school day with a staff member
-helping in the school office during regular school hours
-assisting in the cafeteria or library during regular school hours
-assisting during extracurricular events (dances, fairs, open house, sporting events, etc.)
