WELCOME LETTER TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES:

We hope this letter finds you enjoying a relaxing summer in a cool place!  The faculty and staff of WJJMS are very excited about the opening of school on Wednesday, August 31, and look forward to welcoming you and your families back to school.  This letter includes important information to help prepare your family for the start of the school year.  Welcome letters from each team are included: Beta Letter , Omega Letter , Alpha Letter , Sigma Letter , Pi Letter , Zeta Mu Letter .  Please remember to log into your parent PowerSchool account and complete the Student Information Form.  Once you do so you will be able to see your child’s schedule. Your child should report directly to homeroom on the first day of school. Student schedules will be reviewed by homeroom teachers with the students.  No need to worry as your child will be well cared for and supported by the WJ staff, and all grade 6 students will go through an orientation and be escorted to class on the first day of school.  We have also scheduled a “Meet the Team!” before school starts- please see the orientation schedule at the end of this letter for dates and times.  Students in 6th grade will also have an opportunity during the “Meet the Team” to practice opening their locker for the first time. This always brings back lots of fond memories for parents!

We’ve had a very busy summer here at WJ preparing for the upcoming school year and we are right on track for the first day of school.   We will again be providing Chromebooks to every student this year. This will allow the classroom to extend beyond the physical walls, providing access to millions of resources as well as global collaboration opportunities. Our goal is to cultivate learners and provide opportunities for transformation of learning. More information about appropriate use of a student’s one to one device will follow. With the one to one initiative students no longer need to use their cellphones in class, therefore they will be required to turn off their cellphones and secure them in their lockers during the school day. There will be no exceptions to this rule as it is our hope that this will allow students to be free from distractions and concentrate on personal learning.

Communication with families is a top priority here at WJJMS. Families can keep up to date with our website, Digital Backpack, PowerSchool parent portal, Twitter ([email protected]), and email.  Our district website, www.colchesterct.org, is updated frequently. The Digital Backpack is sent via School Messenger every Friday beginning in August. If you would like a hard copy of the Digital Backpack, please send your request to the office along with your child’s name and grade and we will give your child a printed copy to take home. And finally, the PowerSchool parent portal continues to be an excellent way for students and families to track academic progress and keep track of assignments. Students and parents can log in at home or anywhere with Internet access (including smartphones) to check homework assignments, grades, and the school Daily Bulletin.

Please help us to welcome new staff members to WJJMS this year; Alpha math teacher Shanna Steele, Beta ELA teacher Samantha Laviero, Spanish teacher Kayte Wheeler-Penezic, Special Education Paraprofessionals David Bishop and Halyna McKee, and Night Custodians James Austin and Brandon Anderson.

Welcome all!  We look forward to seeing you during the opening weeks of school.

Sincerely,

Chris Bennett and Stacy Ewings
